Stages of the First Consultation/Examination

The initial consultation usually begins as an informal chat where we try to gather as much information about your main concerns regarding your oral health. It is a one-on-one conversation where we try to understand your past concerns, past dental experiences, past treatments and problems. A discussion regarding your current concern and what brought you to us will be reviewed in-depth.

Comprehensive medical and dental history will be noted down which will then be followed by a dental exam. This involves intraoral and extra oral examinations.

Extra Oral Examination

The Extra oral examination ranges over detailed inspection of the:

  • Face
  • Lips
  • Cheeks
  • Chin
  • Lymph nodes
  • TMJ

Intra Oral Examination

Expert Dental offers detailed care with a complete examination of the neck, head regions and oral cavity areas. We perform a thorough Intra Oral Examination of the Hard Tissue and the Soft Tissue

Hard Tissue:

The dentist would perform an exhaustive check with a Hard Tissue Intraoral Exam of the oral cavity. Each tooth will be examined in detail with documentation of the conditions of the mouth and teeth. These details would evolve over leakage, decay, positions of the teeth, work that has already been done on the teeth, impactions and a treatment plan.

Detailing the examination with various aspects concerning the hard tissue, the dentist would render a minute and comprehensive inspection. The dental professional would check for missing teeth, fractures which may be old, deformed teeth, broken teeth and wear and tear on the teeth. The dentist will also check for abnormal growth of the jaw bone if any.

The Soft Tissue Intraoral Examination would follow the Hard Tissue Intraoral Examination.

Soft Tissue:

Soft Tissue Intraoral Examination involves inspection of the gums, throat, mouth and the tongue. The inside of the lips called the labial mucosa and the lips will be examined. The inner part of the cheeks known as the buccal mucosa will checked next.

The hard palate or the roof of the mouth and the soft palate areas will be inspected by the dentist. The top part and the sides of the tongue will be examined in detail. The dentist would hold the tip of the tongue with a piece of soft gauze and move it gently from side to side as the dentist inspects the entire area for swelling, the texture and color to determine that the oral cavity is healthy.

The floor of the mouth and the salivary glands would be checked along with the gums called as the gingival. The dentist will also check the jaws or TMJ for any abnormalities such as bumps or any inflammation.

Diagnostic X-rays

The dentist will recommend to take X-rays to find pathologies in teeth, and surrounding tissue/bone structure.

Digital photographs and intra oral camera pictures will also be taken to help you understand your concern better.

Blood Test

The other vital investigations would be Blood Tests that range over:

  • Blood sugar
  • Bleeding time / clotting time
  • Total count / differential count

Following the examinations a personalized treatment plan will be made which will take care of your current problem and prevent future ones from occurring.

A final consultation will be held where we shall present all our findings and discuss the treatment plan made for you keeping in mind your current and past concerns. We would also discuss the consequences of not going ahead with the treatment and alternative treatment options if there are any. Cost implications and scheduling of appointments are discussed with the patient before any treatment begins. Patients are then encouraged to take time to consider treatment options, voice their doubts so that when a plan is decided upon we can all be happy that it is the right one.

We welcome you to get in touch with us for a personal consultation with our dentists and take your first step towards achieving great dental care for yourself.
